The first transplantation of embryonic cells (neural stem cells) in a patient has been performed in the phase 1/2 clinical trial for the dry form of age-related macular degeneration.

This first transplantation was performed in StemCells Inc.’s phase 1/2 clinical trial for the study of the safety and efficacy of purified human neural embryonic stem cells, in a volunteer patient as a treatment for the dry form of age-related macular degeneration.

The transplantation of the embryonic cells was carried out on October 3, 2012 at the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas.

Phase 1/2 of the study is expected to include 16 patients in an open-label, dose-escalation study during which the cells will be administered by an injection into the space beneath the retina of the more severely affected eye. These individuals will be evaluated at predetermined time points for one year after administration – implantation to assess safety and any improvement in the patients’ visual acuity. After this one-year period, these individuals will undergo observational follow-up for an additional four years.

Η φάση 1/2  της μελέτης αναμένεται να συμπεριλάβει 16 ασθενείς σε μια ανοικτή , δοσοεξαρτώμενη μελέτη κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας τα κύτταρα θα χορηγηθούν με μια ένεση στο χώρο κάτω από τον αμφιβληστροειδή στο περισσότερο επηρρεασμένο μάτι. Τα άτομα αυτά θα εκτιμηθούν σε καθορισμένες ημερομηνίες για ένα χρόνο μετά την χορήγηση – εμφύτευση για να εκτιμηθεί η ασφάλεια και τυχόν βελτίωση της οπτικής οξύτητας των ασθενών. Μετά από αυτό το χρόνο, στα άτομα αυτά θα γίνει παρακολούθηση παρατήρησης για 4 επιπλέον χρόνια.
